Chapter 20
New Dynamics
The next morning, Chanyeol woke up the usual way. Nugget trotted on his chest, licking him by the chin before Baekhyun swooped down to land a fleeting—and unsatisfying—peck on his cheek.
“Get up, Chanyeol,” Baekhyun sang as he picked up Nugget. As Chanyeol groaned and rolled on his stomach, Baekhyun slanted his lips. “You know, Kris isn’t up yet. Should I not care or should I go wake him up?”
“Fine…” Chanyeol grumbled into his pillow.
Baekhyun frowned. The answer wasn’t coherent to the question he just asked so he figured that Chanyeol was still half-asleep, which was understandable. “Okay, then…I’ll take that as a yes.”
“Yeah…”
Shrugging, Baekhyun fixed Nugget in his arms and headed towards the door. “So, like, I’ll wake him up the usual way. Right?”
“Mhm…” Chanyeol agreed with his face still deep on his bed. Baekhyun took no mind to Chanyeol’s answers and exited the room, whispering to Nugget to stop wagging his tail so much.
Once Baekhyun was gone, Chanyeol went and tried to tease himself into falling back to sleep. But as time went on and despite the fact that he didn’t want to wake yet, his mind was clearing all the grogginess out and began to function. It was then that Baekhyun’s words started to make a return in his head, which kept replaying the entire conversation that he had with his maid. As everything began to sharpen in Chanyeol’s mind, one word from Baekhyun’s mouth stuck out to him: usual. Lifting his eyelids up a bit, Chanyeol felt himself smirking.
“Usual…” he muttered.
It was funny to him for some reason because of Baekhyun’s definitions for some words. In their relationship, “usual” meant waking up to being kissed—Chanyeol’s eyes immediately shot open and he scrambled out of bed.
In his mind, Baekhyun was an idiot. He was an idiot, who had absolutely no physical boundaries—except for the one where they couldn’t fuck, of all things—and no heart to ever feel remorse over how his touchy touches and kisses affected other people. Adding onto that, Baekhyun liked to coin the term “casual” so right then, Chanyeol had the feeling that the idiot went to Kris’ room to kiss the undeserving fellow awake like he was the ugly version of Sleeping Beauty.
Shooting out of bed, Chanyeol moved his naked way to grab a pair of boxers. Then he slipped on a plain white shirt before heading to Kris’ room with disheveled hair and a disgruntled look on his face. When he reached the room, he saw that the door was open, but then felt a quick sense of relief when he saw Baekhyun come out of the room with Nugget in tow. As quickly as the relief came, it left and was soon replaced by his demanding curiosity.
“What’d you do?”
Baekhyun raised his brows. “I woke him up the usual way like you told me to,” he replied back with a grin. Baekhyun passed Chanyeol and Nugget followed right behind him, nipping and trying to get Chanyeol’s foot to play with him, but when Chanyeol didn’t move, Nugget lost interest and kept following his dad.
“I like your hair,” Baekhyun added as he walked on with his back towards Chanyeol. “It makes you look sexy.”
Chanyeol watched Baekhyun until he turned the corner with three words in mind: Absolutely no boundaries.
Turning his attention to Kris, Chanyeol walked through his room and found his business partner sitting up in bed, wiping a hand across his face before looking at it. Chanyeol recognized what Kris was doing because he had done that the first few times he started waking up to being kissed by the unusual duo.
Trying to keep himself under control, Chanyeol barked, “What’re you doing?”
Kris jolted at the sudden company that he wasn’t aware that he had. “Nothing. I just…I just woke up,” he mumbled as he continued to stare at hand. “That was weird…”
Chanyeol wasn’t in the mood. He was never in the morning mood, but Baekhyun's sudden kissing infidelity irked him even more that morning. “What was weird?”
Kris still looked confused, but just shook his head. “I don’t know. I just got kissed on the side of my face, then on my lips and it’s just—Is that normal? I woke up and Baekhyun pulled away.”
Chanyeol held himself. He wanted to hit Kris’ face and throw Baekhyun’s jiggly ass down a pit that led straight to Hell, but he had to remind himself that Baekhyun was just an idiot with no boundaries. After that, Chanyeol told himself that whoever Baekhyun chose to poison with those lips of his, it wasn’t any of Chanyeol’s business. It wasn’t like morning kisses were reserved for him—Hell, he never even asked for the morning ritual. Baekhyun and Nugget could kiss someone else from the household such as Kai or Sehun and Chanyeol wouldn’t have given a shit—in fact, make that two shits. Two shits that Chanyeol wouldn't give if Baekhyun kissed another person.
Cocking his head, Chanyeol forced on a smirk. “Well, you’re awake now so get dressed and eat. We’ll be collaborating all day.”
“Yeah, okay…” Kris stopped staring as his hand and sigh, lazily throwing the covers off of him. “Tell Baekhyun to clean my room. I want it exactly the way it was before I came in here. I don’t like clutter.”
Not liking the fact that Baekhyun had to do more chores to make up for Kris’ laziness, Chanyeol dropped his fake look and scrunched his brows. “There wouldn’t be a clutter if you just cleaned up after yourself!”
“He’s the maid. It’s his job to do these types of things,” Kris grumbled, rubbing his chest as he shuffled his way to the closet.
The response didn’t lighten Chanyeol’s mood. “Right. It is his job, but at least be a little more considerate and pick up things that you can do on your own. I don’t want him getting back issues from having to clean up after you for six days.”
Kris paused and turned his head to Chanyeol. “If he doesn’t pick up after you, then what good is he?”
Chanyeol didn’t know why, but the conversation on Baekhyun’s treatment and duties as his maid in the household was getting him angry, because of the fact that Kris didn’t see things the way he did when it came to Baekhyun.
“He makes the beds, vacuums when he needs to, and cleans the bathrooms. Those are his basic jobs,” Chanyeol explained very carefully. “He also does small things on the side when asked like cleaning the dishes or taking the damn dog out for a walk, but he does what he needs to. He’s here for the basic and the small, not to clean up after everyone all day. We’re not kids and Baekhyun’s not a slave worker—no matter how many times the idiot complains that he is—so pick up after your own things, Kris.” Before Chanyeol left Kris alone to go about his business, he told him that Baekhyun would come back, but to fix the bed only.
Kris didn’t know how to feel about breakfast. He had Baekhyun staring at him blankly while casually petting a dog in his arms that would sometimes try and eat off his plate. Sehun was the same as he had always been; quiet and to himself. The new guy—Kai— smiled at him, but minded his own business, too. Chanyeol ate like something was annoying him inside that head of his and Kyungsoo was acting like he wasn’t even there—which was something he was used to. Kyungsoo was evasive towards him ever since that one drunken mistake of trying to flirt with him.
Trying to break the weird atmosphere, Kris smiled at Baekhyun. “So, Baekhyun, how’d you sleep yesterday?”
Out of normal habit, Baekhyun opened his mouth to respond, but only got to sounding out the first letter of the words he wanted to say before he noticed Chanyeol’s glance at him. Instead, Baekhyun shrugged and glanced down at Nugget, whispering inaudible things to the dog.
Kris was almost used to Baekhyun being mute with him so he let it go. “I slept pretty well, thanks for asking…” he said awkwardly. “I woke up really nicely, too, so I guess I should thank you for that.”
Even though Baekhyun had his head turned down towards Nugget, Chanyeol could see a smirk spread across his face . There wasn’t any doubt in Chanyeol’s mind. Baekhyun wasn’t smiling at the dog. He was smiling at Kris’ remark regarding the way he was woken up.
Setting his utensils down loudly, Chanyeol scooted his chair back and rose from the table. His attention wasn’t at Kris, but instead at Baekhyun who was looking at him with an amused look on his face. “I’m done.”
Kris blinked and looked down at his plate. “If you’re done, then I’ll see you in a bit because I’m not—”
“Then eat faster. You’re wasting time.”
Kyungsoo glanced at Chanyeol. He would’ve spoken up, but he secretly wanted Kris gone from the table. Baekhyun, on the other hand, didn’t catch Chanyeol’s tense drift and the full energy of his emanating dark mood.
“You shouldn’t tell him to eat faster,” Baekhyun said. “Did you know that eating too fast sometimes leads to not chewing property, which could put you in risk for choking? It’s common sense, really—”
“Baekhyun,” Chanyeol warned.
“Chanyeol,” Baekhyun retorted, cocking his head at Kris before imitating a choking man and pretending to almost fall over.
Chanyeol wanted to argue, but everyone was watching them. Giving up to Baekhyun’s defense over Kris, Chanyeol pursed his lips. “Fine. When you’re done, you know where to go.”
Curtly, Chanyeol left the scene and it took a while for the atmospheric mood to return. Baekhyun figured that they’d go back to eating silently, but instead, Kris gave up trying to talk to him and decided to try his luck with Kyungsoo.
It was like déjà vu for Baekhyun. If Baekhyun thought that Chanyeol was gay for Kyungsoo before, Kris proved to be even gayer. Every laugh and every attempt to woo his friend made Baekhyun upset, because to him, Kris’ plan was becoming blatantly clear to him.
Kris was obviously waiting for Chanyeol to leave so that he could make a move on Kyungsoo, who, by the observations of Byun Baekhyun, was Chanyeol’s secret love. It infuriated him a bit to know that Chanyeol was getting backstabbed by a business partner.
In the house hold then, Chanyeol was the dad, Kyungsoo was the mother, and Kai, Sehun, and he were the kids. Kris, on the other hand, was that weird guy who was trying to hit on their mom while dad was away.
As the day dragged on, Baekhyun noticed that Chanyeol would busy himself with Kris to a point that Chanyeol would blatantly ignore him. At one point, Baekhyun was delivering some snacks that Kyungsoo begrudgingly made because he knew that this week was Chanyeol's time for design and prototype final evaluations, which was what Kris was there for so Kyungsoo had no choice, but to be supportive.
When Chanyeol allowed him to step in momentarily to set down the tray of food and tea, Baekhyun did so, but curiosity got the best of him. He tried to walk over to where Kris and Chanyeol were working and going over papers, but Chanyeol barked at him to go away.
Baekhyun would've lied if he didn't admit that he felt the burn of the harshly said request. Chanyeol continued to scribble things down, not even raising his head to look at Baekhyun.
Kris was a different story. He scooted closer to Chanyeol when he saw Baekhyun's frowning face at the two of them. Baekhyun didn't know it, but his face flinched at the lack of proximity between the two men. To Kris, Baekhyun seemed even more bothered when Chanyeol didn't yell at him to "go away" or at least scoot the fuck back.
Not wanting to be a bother to the two guys, Baekhyun shrugged it off before retreating out of the room. After he had gone, Kris shoulder bumped Chanyeol, which made him drop the act of actually being hard at work.
"Chanyeol," Kris tsked. "Be a little gentler."
Chanyeol scoffed. "He was going to try and walk over here. He would've seen my work. Have you forgotten who the hell that guy is?"
"He doesn't seem like a threat. He probably wouldn't be able to comprehend any of this."
Chanyeol held himself from doing anything brash. He was already annoyed that Kris was yet again demeaning Baekhyun's worth and ability. Deciding not to respond to the remark, Chanyeol just shook his head.
"I don't need him distracting me right now," Chanyeol muttered. "He wouldn't have left unless I yelled at him to."
"Oh, but you didn't even see his face."
"What?"
Kris shrugged. "All I'm saying is people with legs like him should be handled gently. Can't be too rough. Or else how will he hold up?"
Chanyeol's fingers flinched and curled, but he willed himself to put his impulsive idea of punching Kris in the mouth to continue working instead.
In the late afternoon, Chanyeol grew tired of pushing himself to work hard in order to get rid of Baekhyun on his mind. He took a break and Kris essentially took one, too.
While Chanyeol lounged around in his chair, his eyes saw Kris standing by the window with his fingers pulling the blinds down. "What're you looking at?" he asked when he noticed Kris grinning.
"Nothing."
Chanyeol creased his brows. "Kris."
Kris laughed at whatever he was watching. "I'm just watching your household employees run around half naked."
Chanyeol sat up in his seat. "Half what!?"
"You heard me—Oh...Kyungsoo just fell," Kris muttered. "He's getting back up—shit."
"What?" Chanyeol asked, tempted to jump out of his seat.
"Sehun kicked the ball that they're playing with in the new kid's balls. Kai, I think. He was distracted by—Oh..."
Less interested, Chanyeol leaned back in his chair. "What happened now?"
"Baekhyun's going to the kid with aching balls," Kris informed. "He's putting a hand on his back. I don't know. He looks like he's trying to comfort him—wait. Hold on—well, fuck." Pulling the blinds down some more, Kris practically pushed his face against the window.
Interested again, Chanyeol asked him what the hell happened. At first Kris was tempted to withhold the information, but when Chanyeol stood up from his seat, Kris figured he might as well say it.
"Your sweet ass fiancé's trying to grab Kai's jewels, Yeol..."
"I'm trying to help!"
"Go away!"
Baekhyun huffed. "Quit being so straight and stubborn."
"I'm not being stubborn!" Kai retorted. "I just don't want you to—ohhh my god."
"See? Better?"
Chanyeol gripped the blinds so hard, Kris had to remind him to let go.
