Chapter 11
Maximum Height
A/n: sorry for typos :>
Packing was a task that bothered Baekhyun to the ends of the earth, but luckily, Luhan, who had stayed at his house for a few hours after their tutoring session ended, offered to help. Fond of the way Luhan’s delicate hands carefully placed his clothes in an organized and space-efficient manner, Baekhyun stood back and handed what he wanted to be included. Of course, as they grew more comfortable with one another as friends, Luhan learned how to oppose Baekhyun’s judgments. When the brunet tried to hand over arms full of jackets, hoodies, and jeans, Luhan searched through them all and rejected ninety percent of them.
“I checked the weather and I don’t think you’ll like hiking and doing anything in hot weather,” Luhan had said as he gently set aside many of Baekhyun’s choices. Opting for a casual wear that wouldn’t be bothersome in the long run, he packed the brunet his t-shirts and shorts, only putting in one jacket and one pair of jeans deep inside the luggage.
Baekhyun was close to arguing, but then decided he didn’t feel like it. Luhan was kind enough to pack for him, so there wasn’t much his moral compass was allowing him to do at that point. After Luhan left, taking with him some leftover dinner that Baekhyun’s mother insisted that the boy take home, Baekhyun started finishing off his luggage with more private things like underwear, toothbrush, tooth paste, and hair products.
He contemplated for a while whether or not to take all the valuable products that made his hair tamable, but then realized that he had no one to impress in the woods. In fact, attempting to look nice in the wilderness would have no merit other than to gain Chanyeol’s attention even further. But then again, the more Baekhyun thought about it, the more he was reminded of the fact that Chanyeol said he was beautiful either way—with or without the hair or makeup.
As his thoughts shifted towards the giant basketball player who had infiltrated his mind, Baekhyun bit his lips. He tried to move from it, but he found that he couldn’t even as he slipped into the shower. Under the heavy flow of water droplets on his body, he felt cornered and he knew that it was because of everything that was happening with Chanyeol and the entire wagon of issues that came with him.
He had already gotten to the conclusion that he was absolutely terrified of the male, and it wasn’t because Chanyeol seemed dangerous. Not in the obvious sense since Chanyeol would never even hurt a fly, but in the sense that pain was inevitable in the end.
His relationship with Chanyeol seemed like a doomed bike ride to Baekhyun. Lately, Chanyeol was everywhere, from his mind to his cellphone and even to the morning announcements. Baekhyun could feel his strong resolve against relationships and feelings slowly dissolve, yet he couldn’t prevent the process from dismantling the wall that he had built up to protect himself. It was as if he and Chanyeol were on a bicycle, quickly accelerating down a steep hill at a faster velocity than Baekhyun could calculate. However, this bicycle had no brakes; therefore, there was no way Baekhyun could ease them to a slow stop. In the end, everything out would just come to a crashing end, hurting both of them.
It was clear to Baekhyun that Chanyeol needed to eject himself from the doomed metaphoric bike before he realized that Baekhyun wasn’t all that he thought he was. The brunet admitted that, perhaps, Chanyeol loved him as a person. He was aware that the giant admired his kindness towards his own grandmother and willingness to tutor others behind closed doors, but Baekhyun knew that those things would not be enough to keep a relationship alive.
Chanyeol shared no common interest with him. Baekhyun liked to read books and magazines about politics, thinking of possible solutions to multiples issues globally and sending those ideas out to politicians. He liked staying home and being secluded, left to his own devices rather than to waste his precious time with people who served no purpose to him.
Baekhyun was almost positive that Chanyeol was the opposite. The giant probably loved meeting with his friends to play a game of friendly basketball rather than opting to stay at home like a hermit. Politics and science were probably boring subjects to keep with even though, personally, Baekhyun secretly loved it.
In truth, Baekhyun had no intentions of letting Chanyeol in, even if this decision was becoming harder and harder to withhold. He only wanted to spare the dopey jock of the disappointment he would have to face the moment he comes to realizing that Baekhyun was just a big bore, despite how content he was with himself.

His shower took longer than usual, but that had been happening more often than not since Baekhyun started mentally wandering towards thoughts about Chanyeol. He didn’t like it, but his head was just stalled on the boy.
After getting out of the shower and quickly drying himself off, he changed into his night time clothes which were a simple white t-shrit and his boxers. Once his hair was fairly dried by the towel, Baekhyun stepped out into the hall and walked back to his bedroom, two doors down.
Just as he began to thank the shower drain for consuming more than just water but his thought as well, Baekhyun opened his door to a surprise. There, Chanyeol sat on his bed with a big brown paper bag on his lap, seeming as though he had been patiently waiting for a while. Shutting his eyes forcefully, Baekhyun wondered if the steam in the bathroom was causing him to hallucinate, but when he drew them open once more, nothing changed. Chanyeol was still there.
“Hi!”
Left speechless by the sudden visit, Baekhyun looked around in the hallway for a quick second before hurrying to close the door behind him. “What’re you doing here?” he asked unintentionally in a hostile tone. “It’s late. Don’t you own a clock?”
Despite the treatment, Chanyeol smiled. “I do! I actually came by to help you pack, but I see that you’re already finished.”
“So, then, I guess you can leave now.”
“I can’t.” Chanyeol looked down for a moment. “Your mom told me to come in. She said she’s bringing up snacks in a minute.”
Giving the giant an incredulous look, Baekhyun moved from his door and started picking things off the floor. It gave him something to do rather than to just stand there and awkwardly stand in front of the giant in his underwear. “My mother’s just being friendly. You really don’t have to stay. How did you even know where I lived?”
Chanyeol cocked his head as he watched Baekhyun lamely occupying himself. “Yeah, your mom’s friendly. She asked me if I was your friend, and I told her that I honestly wanted more than that.”
Baekhyun froze. “You what?”
“She thought I was being cute, though, so no harm, no foul!” Chanyeol quickly amended. “She even laughed and encouraged me to stay, which, here I am. She also told me that I seemed like a nice guy and that she approved, so, just to let you know, we’re in the go and you just have to say yes the next time I ask you out.”
“You’re impossible.”
“But you’re not,” Chanyeol hummed playfully before Baekhyun threw a Life magazine at his face, which he dodged. “Anyways, I got your address from Luhan. He told me what you guys were up to, too.”
“Did he tell you that he helped me pack?” Baekhyun asked, looking over his shoulder as he placed his things in a disorganized manner on his desk. Then, he turned around to face his company, crossing his arms as he leaned against the wooden desk.
“He did, actually.”
“Then why’d you tell me you came to help me pack?”
“I thought that I needed a legitimate excuse to see you,” Chanyeol shrugged.
Sighing, Baekhyun shook his head in disapproval. Then, his attention crawled to the bag in Chanyeol’s hands. “What’s that?”
“Come over here and I’ll give it to you.”
Not one to play games, but seeing as how he wasn’t in the mood for a war, Baekhyun moved across the room and took a seat right beside the jock on his bed. “Alright. Well?”
“It’s food,” Chanyeol said, handing the bag over. “I planned on coming earlier, but something came up. Maybe you can heat it up for breakfast.”
Holding the fairly lofty bag with a few bento boxes inside, Baekhyun looked at him, meeting his gaze. “Why’d you bring me food?”
“It’s kind of like a peace offering.”
“For what?”
“I wanted to apologize,” Chanyeol said with a small grin on his face as he heaved his shoulders. “I don’t exactly know what for, but I must’ve done something wrong within these last few days because you’ve been ignoring me more than usual, you know.”
“Chanyeol—”
“So, I guess, I’ll apologize for everything!” Baekhyun groaned as he watched Chanyeol take in a deep breath. “I’m sorry for asking you to come to the game even though I know you’re not into that. I just wanted you to see that I can still be sexy and attractive while running around. Also, you don’t get to see my guns during practice. I only pull those out on games, so I wanted you to be aware that I’m totally ripped and that I’m a perfectly good physical provider for you—”
“Okay, I get it,” Baekhyun said, smiling to stifle down a small laugh. “You wanted to show off.”
“Hopefully, I won your favor on that one,” Chanyeol said with wide grin from ear to ear. “Next, I’m sorry for Jongin and I and how we were eavesdropping on your conversation with Kyungsoo. We didn’t mean to. We were on our way to get our things from our classroom, but then we heard voices and stuck around to see who it was. I guess we kind of got caught up especially when Kyungsoo was talking like he always is…” He paused. “Should I apologize for Jongin’s words to Kyungsoo? To be honest, I don’t really care. I’m sorry, Baek, but Kyungsoo’s been filling up my inbox about this trip even though I’ve made it clear to him that I wasn’t going to do anything drastic like filing a complaint against you for his benefit.”
Not surprised at all by Kyungsoo’s actions, Baekhyun looked off. “Right, well, you can stop apologizing, because—”
“But I haven’t even gotten to apology number three,” the giant whined. “I’m sorry for calling you at inconvenient times—”
“Chanyeol, you can stop apologizing because I’m not mad at you for any of those reasons. In fact, I’m not mad at you at all. You’re just paranoid.”
“I don’t know, Baek,” Chanyeol said slowly as if he was suspicious. “You were purposely ignoring me during lunch yesterday. Then, you didn’t even reply to any of my text messages. I was pretty sure that you were mad about the eavesdropping thing.”
Baekhyun almost felt bad for giving Chanyeol such a chase with no end. He wasn’t going to admit the fact that the reason why he had distanced himself was because of some damn rumor about the father of the ex-vice president’s fetus. Although Baekhyun doubted the rumor to a degree, there was no clarity as he didn’t know Chanyeol well enough in character to judge the potential.
“No,” Baekhyun replied after a few seconds. “There have been a few things on my mind that I haven’t been able to settle with.”
“Maybe I can help you, then?” Chanyeol said kindly, tilting his face and making Baekhyun grin—just barely.
“What if you’re the thing that has been on my mind that I haven’t been able to settle yet?” Baekhyun scoffed. “What an oxymoron.”
The look on Chanyeol face only radiated. “Oh, you’ve been thinking about me?”
“I said what if.”
“Same thing.”
After relocating the brown bag to the floor, Baekhyun gave Chanyeol an unamused look even though it was clear to both that he was merely exaggerating. “Don’t you think it’s time to leave now?”
“I never got the reason as to why you’ve been treating me like I’ve contacted the plague.”
“I already told you that I’ve been—”
Chanyeol rolled his eyes as he gestured his hand in a circular motion. “Yes, you told me that you’ve had a lot of things on your mind. Now, tell me the real reason. I promise I won’t gossip about it or spread it on social media. I swear, if it’s going to break my heart, I won’t even update my status online to heartbroken. I’ll just bottle it in, so just hit me with your best shot.”
Being able to ask things in a straightforward manner was a major plus in anyone’s character, including Baekhyun’s, but oddly, he found that trait difficult to utilize at the moment .
However, he felt that it would be better to be forward rather than to avoid the issue and become tangled in a mess of misunderstanding. Gathering up the strength to ask, Baekhyun pursed his lips. “I heard something the day before, and I hope you don’t mind me asking, but are you—”
Whether he was saved from having to ask or interrupted rudely, Baekhyun didn’t know which feeling to side with when his mother walked in after briefly knocking, plate full of hot cookies in both hands. Chanyeol looked excited as he stood up and greeted her. Baekhyun continued to sit on his bed in awe at the connection between the two. He said his thanks to his mother before she left and Chanyeol returned on the bed, setting the plate on the mattress.
“She approves of me and she made us cookies at this time in the evening. I like your mom, Baekhyun.”
“Hurry up and eat so you can leave,” Baekhyun said, not all too serious.
Brazen and brave, Chanyeol made himself comfortable as he fell back and lied on the bed. “I can’t leave yet. You didn’t ask me what you wanted to ask before she came in.”
Too tired to even open up the case, Baekhyun refused. He knew that if he asked then, it would start a firestorm. Turning back on his prior decision, he shook his head. “I’ve decided it’s not that important.”
“It’s important to me,” Chanyeol said as he looked up at Baekhyun who was staring down at him. “Here I am, lying on your bed, because I really want to date you.”
“Maybe some other time.”
“You’re going to avoid me like I have an STD.”
Baekhyun scrunched his brows. “Do you have an STD?”
“What? No!” Chanyeol said with a slightly disturbed expression on his face. “That’s impossible. I would never.”
“Well, I don’t know that.”
The smile on Chanyeol’s face had gone and he looked at the brunet seriously. Baekhyun wondered what was going on in the giant’s mind when the silence dragged on. Before he could open his mouth and ask, Chanyeol spoke. “I know for a fact that I don’t have an STD because I’ve never had sex before,” he confessed before looking away. “Am I uncool to you now?”
Baekhyun sat there, blinking with nothing to say. His voice had been lost, because despite his stoic expression, on the inside, he felt as though a burden was lifted off of his shoulders. The news of Chanyeol’s virginity came as an indirect answer to the question that burned at his tongue. The rumor was only a rumor it seemed, and even though the reason why the girl planted her lips on the giant’s was still a mystery, Baekhyun pushed the thought away for another day.
Laughing, Baekhyun kicked Chanyeol’s long legs. “Very uncool,” he teased. “Now, really. Eat your cookies and leave.”
Chanyeol pouted. “You haven’t asked your question.”
“I already got my answer.”
There was a short paused. “You wanted to know if I had an STD?”
Shaking his head, Baekhyun reached out and took a cookie for himself. “No.”
Chanyeol thought about it for a moment. Then, he smirked. “You wanted to know if I was a virgin. I see how it is.”
“Stop with your theories,” Baekhyun muttered as he chewed off a piece. “Theories without proof have no purpose.”
“Just admit that you wanted to know if you’d be the one deflowering me or not.” Chanyeol couldn’t help himself, bursting out in a fit of laughter.
Embarrassment flushed Baekhyun’s face as he smacked the giant’s thigh. “Will you shut up? You're being ridiculous!”
Taking a minute to calm down from his own humor, Chanyeol’s laughter turned to quiet chuckling. Then, as he wiped his wet eyes, he smiled before opening his mouth wide. “Feed me a cookie and I swear to you that I’ll leave. I promise.”
Quick to jump at the deal, Baekhyun took a crisp chocolate chip cookie and hovered it over Chanyeol’s mouth. But before he could put it in, Chanyeol shook his head. “Use your mouth.”
“What?”
“Put the cookie in your mouth and hand it over to me like that.”
“Chanyeol.”
“I’m just a desperate man in the friend zone!” Chanyeol said, reminding Baekhyun of his status. “You’ve been mean to me and I think I deserve consolation.”
“Will you leave if I do this?”
“I promise you, I will take the platter and leave this house as a happy camper,” Chanyeol smiled.
Muttering as he conceded, Baekhyun turned the desert on himself and held the cookie in between his lips just barely. Then he leaned down carefully, slotting the cookie right in Chanyeol’s awaiting mouth. They made eye contact for a short second when making the transfer, and the embarrassment flew across Baekhyun’s face. Before he could do anything about it, Chanyeol snaked a hand on the back of Baekhyun’s neck, preventing him from moving, and turned his head, letting the cookie fall on the bed.
Then, when Baekhyun was too frozen in place to struggle, Chanyeol took advantage of the opportunity to place a quick kiss on the brunet’s lips before he grinned. “I really like you, Byun Baekhyun. More than I like the taste of cookie crumbs on your lips, actually.”
Finally finding control of his body, Baekhyun pulled away and stumbled back, almost falling to the floor. Luckily for him, he was able to hold on to the edge of his bed as Chanyeol jumped up and laugh. Taking the platter in his hands, he gave Baekhyun a wink. “The bus leaves tomorrow at seven-thirty, so don’t stay up until three in the morning like you usually do, alright? Good-night. I’ll be sure to tell your mom I'm in love with her cookies.”
Then, as Baekhyun watched Chanyeol leave with his lips pursed together, he felt his hibernating heart come to life.
He knew Park Chanyeol wasn’t referring to the sweets.
