Chapter 41
The Recurring Past
As they walked down the stairs together in silence, heading to the parking lot, Tao turned his head to Kris, who was fumbling with the keys in his pocket. He jabbed him harshly at the side on purpose, not caring whether Kris would’ve appreciated it or not. “Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask you something.”
Kris barely spared him the glance, but he listened anyways. “Did you really need to fucking jab me, though?” Kris made a face, but Tao didn’t bother to look at it. “What? What’d you need to ask?”
“It’s about that photo. Delete it, would you?” Tao muttered.
Kris stopped, consequently making Tao come to a halt, too. “What photo?”
Tao frowned, giving a glare edge to his face. “That photo, you shit,” he mumbled harshly.
“I take a lot of photos, Huang,” Kris said before he started walking again. “Which one are you talking about?”
Tao scowled and took a hold of Kris by gripping at his arm. “The photo you took of me in the shed. Ring a fucking bell, or what?”
Kris glanced down where Tao had a hold of him and carefully shook him off. “Oh, that one.” He looked at Tao. “I don’t know, Huang. I kind of like that photo.”
Tao shook off the shock that shot at him when Kris said those words. “Wha—No. Delete it. I don’t care.”
“Why? Don’t you trust me with it?” Kris asked, teasingly with a grin on his face. When Tao continued to frown disapprovingly at him, Kris’ grin fell. “You don’t trust me.”
“Not as much as I trust other people,” Tao replied. “The hierarchy goes with Kyungsoo on top, then Suho, Baekhyun, and then there’s—Never mind. You’re on the bottom, okay? Just delete it.”
“What if I don’t want to?”
Tao groaned. “Then I’m not going to lunch with you and the rest.”
Kris scoffed at Tao’s answer, but paused to look at him honestly. “Fine. I’ll be back once lunch is over with the rest. You can sit here and laminate,” Kris said.
Kris picked up his pace and finished climbing down the stairs. He glanced behind him, expecting Tao to be right behind him, chasing, but what he saw was nothing, but walls. He cursed as he pushed the exit door open and walked out of the school building, heading towards the parking lot. He walked stiffly, rendering Tao’s request in his mind.
He honestly did like the photo, just not the memory that was imprinted on it with invisible ink. After thinking about it in those few seconds of walking, Kris decided that it was best to just get rid of that photo. Neither of them could move on knowing that the photo existed. He sighed and began to dig in his pockets for his phone.
When Kris couldn’t locate his phone on him, his brows creased. What the fuck…Kris rechecked all his pockets, but was met with the same results: it wasn’t with him. He groaned when he figured that he had left in back in the classroom.
Pivoting on his heels, Kris made a sharp turn back to the school building, taking a different entrance in, the one nearest to where he was. He quickly made his way back up the third floor where his classroom was. When he entered the classroom, there were a few students, who chose to stay and eat their homemade lunches there.
Kris paid no mind to them when he went over to where he sat. His desk was clear so he stuck an arm inside the small storage space underneath it. His hands searched for a while until he felt the familiar shape of his device.
He took it out and unlocked it. He went straight to the photo gallery and went to a folder containing the picture that Tao and he—secretly— wanted gone. He clicked on the photo, tapped for options, and deleted the photo with no hesitation. Then he sighed after knowing that it was gone forever.
Chanyeol had to deal with the biggest frustration since his parents were back in town: sexual frustration. Since they were back, he couldn’t have Baekhyun at the house and have a romp in the night with him whenever he wanted anymore. That annoyed him since he didn’t know where else he could have a taste of his vixen anymore. Baekhyun’s house was out of the question. Chanyeol liked Baekhyun’s parents and he didn’t wanna fall from their graces by being walked in while his dick was deep inside their son’s—tight—hole.
At home, Chanyeol couldn’t necessarily act out, but at the same time, he didn’t really care if his parents saw him drinking around the house. It wasn’t like there was anything they could do about it.
The one thing that Chanyeol hated about his parents being home, though, was the fact that they would not stop going on and on about Yoona. Chanyeol knew that they knew that he didn’t want to talk about the girl he wasted time being with and glooming over. It was stupid to dwell on the past when he had Baekhyun.
One night during dinner, the subject of Chanyeol’s future featuring a figure in his past came up again. As Chanyeol picked and played with his food, sitting uncomfortably in his chair, he heard his father ask him what he was planning on doing after he finished High School.
Chanyeol responded with an “I don’t know,” answer, though he knew for sure that he’d have to go into business for a while before working from the bottom—or in the middle hierarchy—of his parents’ company before moving onto a larger head and title. He presumed that his father knew this too since he didn’t ask or wonder what Chanyeol meant by “I don’t know”. It was Chanyeol’s mom that mentioned mixing the past in with the present—and near future—therefore ruining that night for him.
“So I was talking with Yoona over the phone—”
Chanyeol interrupted her by groaning. “Can we not talk about her?”
His mom frowned. “I understand that you two left off on the wrong foot—”
“—A very stupid and wrong foot,” Chanyeol added.
“—But that’s more the reason for you to meet and fix things up.”
Chanyeol gave his mom an incredulous look. “Damn it, you know that I don’t give a shit about her anymore!” he cried, standing up from his chair. His mother only frowned deeper. His dad had totally signed out of the entire situation, turning to his side to discuss something with the help.
“You say that, but I really don’t believe you, Chanyeol,” she said in a toneless voice. “Your father and I know what goes on in this house when we’re gone, alright? We’ve dealt with knowing about your numerous little flings here and there, and we have dealt with you drinking, but what we can't seem to deal with is watching our son go on this downward spiral.”
Chanyeol wanted to scoff. Downward spiral? He wasn’t aware that having multiple partners since Yoona meant that he was on a downward spiral off to god knows what. “You’ve only been back for a few days. Have I brought any bimbos home since then?”
“Now why would you do in front of us when you can freely do that when we’re gone?”
Chanyeol chuckled. “True.”
“Now,” she said, straightening her position. “You’re about to graduate soon so you might as well fill in those pot holes in your life—Yoona included—before you move on.”
“Great, but I can’t really do anything with her not here, now can I?” Chanyeol challenged.
“Hn.” His mother put down her utensils and picked up her glass of wine, lifting it up to her lips. “Her work with her team at the hospital is coming to an end. She’ll be back in Seoul to work with the hospitals here. Her parents don’t live here, as you know, they retired to the country life. Instead of her having to pay for a hotel room for a month, I have invited her—”
“—Please fucking tell me you did not—”
“—to come and stay with us for the time being,” his mother finished. “She agreed after I convinced her. She’ll be here soon.”
Chanyeol felt like hitting himself with a brick and just killing himself that way. “Stop it. If shit didn’t work out the first time, then it won’t work out the second time! Drop your stupid fantasy!”
She ignored the last remark. “Chanyeol, it could work out if you just tried,” she said, sounding as if she was almost pleading with him.
Chanyeol took a step back from the table and clenched his fists. “I don’t give a damn about trying. Why would I even fucking try?” he asked, getting angry. “I already have someone. I don’t need to try and fix things with her because I don’t need her. I wouldn’t wanna cheat on who I’m dating now anyways. What kind of person would I be?”
Chanyeol’s mother blinked, staring blankly at her son for the longest seconds of her life. “Dating someone? Who?” When Chanyeol hesitated, she added, “I don’t consider one of your quick flings to be a committed relationship, Chanyeol.”
“This isn’t a quick fling,” Chanyeol replied coldly. “And I’ll be damned if you’re going to force me to push this person aside for someone who pushed me aside.”
“Then I would like to meet this person,” she said, interlacing her fingers.
Chanyeol folded his arms. “I don’t want to.”
“Then we’ll just have to ask around,” she retorted. “You’re pretty popular, aren’t you? Who you’re dating wouldn’t be a secret to people at your school.”
Chanyeol scowled at his own mother. He loved her, but hell, she was hard to love in moments like these. “Why don’t you just butt out since it’s really not your business, you know.”
“Who my son is dating is my business.” She paused. “Don’t argue with me, Chanyeol. Set a date and invite this person over. I’d like to meet them. I’m sure your father does, too,” she said, glancing at her husband, who had zoned out of the entire conversation entirely, being in a deep conversation about the entrée in front of him.
Chanyeol roughly sighed knowing that he couldn’t argue or win when his mother was in this attack stance. “Fine,” he said sharply. “Is this Friday night good?”
“Perfect.”
Chanyeol intertwined his fingers with Baekhyun’s, tangling them together as they were walking to an entrance at the side of their school. Baekhyun looked up and saw the stressed out expression on Chanyeol’s face, frowning at the sight. “Are you okay?”
Chanyeol glanced at him, opening his mouth as if to say something, but words never really came out. Instead, he pulled Baekhyun to a secluded corner and gently pushed him against the wall. Baekhyun, not knowing what the hell was going on with his giant, let Chanyeol kiss the life out of him.
When Chanyeol finished unleashing his frustration on Baekhyun’s lips, he pulled away slowly, but rested his head on Baekhyun’s shoulder. Baekhyun glanced around to see if anyone was around. There wasn’t.
Baekhyun ran his hands up to Chanyeol’s shoulders, running them soothingly. “Yah, quit being depressing.”
Chanyeol gave a small chuckle. “Sorry, but maybe I should be down a little bit more since it obviously makes you resist me less,” he said, lifting his head up. He held his face right in front of Baekhyun’s, placing a quick kiss on him before straightening his posture. “Stuff’s just been going on.”
Baekhyun clutched his bag strap. “Oh…” He didn’t know whether or not he should dig deeper, but decided he would since Chanyeol was practically silently asking him to ask. “What about?” Then he saw something flicker in Chanyeol’s eyes.
“Family stuff,” Chanyeol said rather quickly, waving a hand as if to dismiss his shitty response. Then he put his hands back in his pockets and leaned back, putting most of his weight on one leg. “Can you come over Friday?” he asked, switching gears.
Baekhyun opened his mouth, but closed it a second later. He gave Chanyeol a questioning look in response to the quick and abrupt question. “Why?”
Chanyeol cocked his head and shrugged. “To meet my parents.”
Baekhyun almost forgot to take an intake of air in. The mentioning of Chanyeol’s parents, who he’d never met or seen before, scared him to a degree. “You want me to meet your parents…” Baekhyun said slowly as if trying to render the thought in his head. “We haven’t even been dating that long.”
“Okay, well, for one, it’s not that I want you to meet them. They’re the ones who want to meet you,” Chanyeol clarified. Then the look in his eyes went from calm to sharp. Following that, a smirk crawled its mischievous way on his face. “And second of all, we’ve actually been going out for a long time now. I actually considered us dating since the first time I saw you,” he joked, “So you should add a couple months to our time together, Baek.”
Baekhyun creased his brows and hit Chanyeol on the arm for the joke. “Whatever,” he huffed. “I don’t understand why you told your parents about me so soon.”
“I kind of had to,” Chanyeol said, admitting the truth. “Anyways, Friday, okay?”
Giving Chanyeol a worried look, Baekhyun nodded. “Okay,” he said in a moderate volume.
Chanyeol grinned at him and took his hands out of his pockets. Taking them, he took Baekhyun under one arm and led both them away from the area and back to one of the entrances leading into the school building. “I mean, I’d rather have us do something else at my house, you know? But, ah, what can you do.” He gripped Baekhyun’s shoulder. “I’ll pick you up, okay?”
Baekhyun scoffed as he was being herded along. “I can drive myself,” he said as he took a hand to try and release himself from Chanyeol’s hold.
Chanyeol wouldn’t let him. “No. I’ll pick you up because we haven’t been alone in a while.”
Baekhyun sighed. “Okay. So I’ll ride with you, I guess.”
“Or,” Chanyeol said as one hand went to pull the door open, “We can park the car somewhere and you can ride me.”
Baekhyun gave Chanyeol a look before he looked down at Chanyeol’s lower area. Then he shook his head. “You’d get my clothes wrinkled and you’d get them dirty. No.”
Chanyeol was taken aback and left in a daze. Baekhyun had managed to take his arm off his shoulder and proceeded to enter the school building alone. It took a moment for Chanyeol to snap out of it and follow. “Yah, were you seriously considering what I said—”
“Maybe,” Baekhyun said, indifferently.
“If I said that I wouldn’t get your clothes—”
“I’m not taking the chance,” Baekhyun said rubbing his eyes. He took a left turn, heading to the cubby area.
“You’re willing to fuck in my car before meeting my parents, but the only reason why you won’t is because you don’t want your clothes wrinkled and soiled?” Chanyeol groaned and picked up his pace, walking side by side Baekhyun. “You’re a fucking tease, Baek.”
And to that, Baekhyun responded with a shrug.
