Chapter 12
Two Worlds
Chanyeol’s office was on the seventh floor, but Baekhyun accidentally got pushed out on the sixth floor. He saw no familiar faces, only those who bothered to spare him a glance to wonder whether or not he should’ve been there in the first place. Faithfully, Nugget walked close to his dad’s feet, trotting along as they explored the sixth floor. It was mostly just a floor for cubicles and people working on their computers. From the look of it, they were coding things into the system.
Oddly enough, Baekhyun wasn’t approached by someone in authority until after his twenty minute walk around began. He most certainly did not look the part of a high power executive. His hair was slightly a mess, and there was a dog drailing after him with a yellow ducky harness and leash. With his face, which Chanyeol had often said made him look like the baby that he was, Baekhyun had the look of a high school student.
“Excuse me, sir. Are you authorized to be in here? Did you accidentally lose your touring group? What’s your guide’s name? I can call him up.”
The man was short, but not so short that he was shorter than Baekhyun. He looked mean, face rugged with a shave that reminded Baekhyun of the cowboys on the cover of his romance novels--and it awed him.
Reaching up, he touched the shocked man’s face and felt his rough shave. Noting that the man had a very strong jaw line, Baekhyun admired it, smiling. “Are you a model?”
“Um, sir--”
“You look like you could be a model,” Baekhyun went on, pulling his hand back. “I think you should think about it.” On the floor, Nugget barked. Bending down, Baekhyun picked him up. “Also, I can see your nipples.” He leaned in. “But that’s okay…”
“Uh--”
“Ah, there you are!”
Turning around, Baekhyun jumped as a familiar face pulled him into an embrace before loosely hanging an arm around his shoulder. “Kris! What’re you doing here?”
Kris laughed, bopping the brunet on his nose with a finger. “Question is, what are you, love? Your fiance’s been calling every two seconds asking me if I’ve found you yet. Can you believe him? Call it off, Byun. Marry me instead, will you?”
Blowing up his cheeks, Baekhyun frowned at him. Then he looked away, exhaling while adjusting his hold on his dog. “No.”
“I may not be as rich as him, but you know I’ve got a thing that’s just as big--”
“I’m still on speaker, Wu.”
Raising his brows, Kris looked at his right hand. “Oh, right. Nevermind. I didn’t say anything, right Baekhyun?”
Groaning, Baekhyun made a drawled noise. “Yep.”
“That’s right. You go right on ahead and marry him.” Then, to the phone, he changed his tone. “I’ll bring him up in a minute.”
“Good--and Baekhyun?”
“Yes, Spock?”
There was a pause and Baekhyun could only guess that Chanyeol was second guessing why they were together--for the hundredth time in their relationship. “Hurry up. I don’t want you lost.”
Suddenly, Kris took the phone back. “Actually, now that you mention it, I have nothing to do right now. Baekhyun shouldn’t be lost in his own soon-to-be-husband’s building. I should give him a tour.”
“Kris--”
“What do you say, Baekhyun?” Kris asked, but then he never let the brunet answer. Changing his voice to sound higher pitched as if Baekhyun’s voice was that high, he changed persona. “Oh, god, yes, please, Kris. I’d love that. I really don’t regret getting engaged to Chanyeol. No, but I’d love this tour. Thank you. Bye, Chanyeol.”
Nugget stuck his tongue out. He approved.
“Baekhyun, my office. Now--”
Kris cut off the call, ending it and shoving the cellphone back into his pocket. He grinned at the man in charge. “It’s okay. I’ll take it from here. This right here if your boss’ wife--I mean, soon-to-be. Nothing’s official just yet, so if any of you are looking to fighting with a multi-millionaire for him, his fiance’s upstairs.”
“Oh, um--” Baekhyun was led away from the floor before he could make a comment. They reached the elevator shaft before he knew it and Nugget was beginning to struggle. Setting him on the floor, Baekhyun watched as the pup hugged Kris’ feet, something he never did with anyone in the house except for him and Kyungsoo on happier occasions. "I'm supposed to be with Chanyeol right now."
"I know," Kris said, pushing the button for the bottom first floor. "But he's with Junghee right now. She needs to brief him about marketing for a while, then accompany him and Sehun into the meetings. What were you going to do? Follow them around like Nugget follows you?"
Blinking, Baekhyun looked up at the floor number. They were nearing four. "I mean, no. Meet his friends, maybe."
"Hn, you should know he has no friends around here, Byun. Business is business. It's nothing too personal."
"Well, you're his friend, aren't you?"
"If I was, would I be hitting on you all the time?"
For a second, Baekhyun didn't reply. Then the elevator stopped on the first floor. "No, but I think you do that because you're still disappointed you couldn't get Kyungsoo to like you at all."
"Ah, touché."
They walked out together, Nugget trying his best to keep up with his father’s stride. Like before, everyone in the lobby looked as though they had places to be. Baekhyun looked up at Kris, toying with his bottom lip. “Are you going to take me to the play pen?”
Halting, Kris turned toward him. “Play pen?” After a second, a light bulb came on. “Ah, the kids’ area. Um, no. You’re not a child. Not with that body of yours. You’re way past puberty, Baekhyun, and if Chanyeol doesn’t know that yet, I think it’s time for you to move on.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Looking around, Baekhyun hummed. “So, where are you taking me first?”
“I actually don't know," Kris confessed under his breath. Nugget gave a little snort. "Do you want to go anywhere specific?"
"Um--"
"Actually, no. Let's go to the test lab."
"Am I going to get lectured by Chanyeol later?"
It seemed like it took Kris a while to fully go over the possibility, but then he shook his head. "He wont."
That sounded like a lie, but Baekhyun knew he had insurance. If anything went wrong, he'd blame Kris. That would, at least, cut the lecturing significantly. Maybe he'd only get a verbal beating for getting lost and what not. For what it was worth, Baekhyun saw that he had nothing to lose.
Nugget trailed along, staring at the adults who were giving him looks. He didn’t like the way that made him feel so small, despite the fact that he was small. Sometimes, he’d overhear his dad’s “fiance” (whatever that was) say that he was a schizophrenic pup due to the fact that the dog liked to think he was bigger than he actually was, having a delusional feeling of epic grandeur. But, those words he didn’t know being said by a large person he didn’t like. Nugget didn’t care, trying to move his legs fast to keep up with his dad and uncle.
Putting an arm around Baekhyun, Kris pulled the brunet closer, grinning at him as the latter raised his brow. “We have a separate elevator system for the testing lab. It’s not open to the public. You can understand, right?”
“As if my family doesn’t have the same thing,” Baekhyun replied, smiling with his head tilted. “It must be something that Parks stole somewhere between my grandfather’s generation and my parents’.”
“It could be the other way around,” Kris said, shrugging as he walked them over to a place where there was less people looking for an elevator ride. As soon as they approached the elevator framed with stainless steel, the taller male let go of the brunet to take out his authorization badge from within his jacket. “Security around this place is tighter than a virgin’s ass sometimes. It’s a little annoying.”
The elevator buzzed and its doors soon opened. Nugget was the first to board, choosing a corner for himself. Baekhyun followed after, then Kris. There was only one button available, which seemed a little ugly to Baekhyun. They could’ve designed the layout more aesthetically.
Kris tapped the button and was asked to swipe his authorization card again, but this time, he also included a security code. After the process was finished, it turned into a normal elevator, playing horrid music that may or may not have reminded Baekhyun of the tropics.
Baekhyun, growing up, was exposed to labs and science early in his life, so when the big reveal happened when the doors came apart, he wasn’t as thrilled as Kris thought he would be, which was sort of a let down for the taller man who thought the sight of robots and scientist would blow the brunet’s pants off of him (though not literally. He’d get fired for that).
“These are nice,” Baekhyun commented as they walked through, watching engineers test out every prosthetic arm and limb. “The material looks soft.”
“It should mimic the softness of the human skin, so of course.”
Pursing his lips, Baekhyun cocked his head. “Isn’t that kind of creepy? To have prosthetics feel like actual skin?”
“If you think about it in a weird way, then I suppose.” Kris shrugged. “If it doesn’t work well in physical therapy, then there’s always the sex industry, which I’m sure you’d be much more interested in.”
“Sex toys are a must to each individual’s sense of sexual independence.” Baekhyun’s eyes watched as an amputee tried on the prosthetic prototype. “It works so smoothly…”
“Yep.” Kris put a hand on Baekhyun’s back to push him along. “It’s all part of that vision-for-the-future-of-prosthetics thing that this company’s been trying to push towards. The difference between Chanyeol’s company and yours is that they’re more...Well, no offense, but they’re more towards the individual rather than the individual’s money.”
“Offended, nonetheless, but I don’t care,” Baekhyun said, shrugging. “It’s my family’s company, but not mine.”
“Do you have any interest in business at all, Baek?”
“Not really. I don’t like any of this.”
“But this is part of your life. It’s also part of Chanyeol’s,” Kris said, moving them along.
Shrugging, Baekhyun picked up Nugget. The dog was getting tired. “I can co-exist with this life, but it doesn’t mean I’m a part of it.”

Chanyeol growled at his cellphone for a good while until Sehun nudged him by the arm. The younger could tell that things didn’t go as the man wanted, but it wasn’t the time to be worrying that a colleague might do more than just give his fiance a tour. Shoving the phone deep into his pocket, the giant made a grab for the shiny silver pen next to the file set before him.
The meeting room was empty, and it was nearing the time when the clients were expected to show. It wasn’t the time to think about Baekhyun or the way he brushed off the elevator ride by practically forcing himself out of the picture, offering to take another ride instead. Glancing to the right, Chanyeol could see that Junghee was outside, speaking to people about the meeting, possibly going over details about the presentation as well.
The fact that he was supposed to be focus was a worrisome in that all he could think about was what Baekhyun could be doing at that very moment. Earlier, he sensed the brunet feeling out of place, but not so much that it was very apparent. If anything, he belonged there more than anyone. Baekhyun’s family was in the same business, and he was more than capable of creating the next new product in technology, but at the same time, that wasn’t true. His fiance had always complained about the field, saying that it was boring and too systematic. That was the only break Chanyeol could think of when trying to figure out a reason why Baekhyun might feel detached.
There were plenty of things to do at the company building. In the back, there was a garden, which they created to de-stress employees. But aside from the play area and the cafe in the lobby, there really weren’t any activities for Baekhyun to be interested in.
Groaning, Chanyeol shut his eyes. Maybe the brunet could walk down the street and shop for a while. The idea was daunting. Just thinking about the bills that would rack up made his head hurt, but then again, Baekhyun wasn’t much of a shopaholic, except for things like books and shitty pajama jeans on sale.
He took a look at his watch, wondering where everyone else was. Being that no one had arrived yet, which was irksome to him and his schedule, Chanyeol put his attention back on his phone and called the brunet again--this time, hoping that Kris wouldn’t interfere with him and his fiance again.
The latter’s cellphone rang four times before Chanyeol heard Baekhyun pick up, sounding chirpy and happy for some reason. It made Chanyeol curious. “Are you going to hang up on me again?” he began half-jokingly. When he heard Baekhyun snort, he grinned. “Where are you now? Are you coming up to my office soon?”
“I don’t know. Kris is showing me the test lab--Hey, aren’t you supposed to be in a meeting?”
“Yes, but they’re not here yet,” Chanyeol replied, glancing at the door. “It’s pissing me off.”
“Hmmm… Have you ever thought about having sex in the office?”
Raising his brow, Chanyeol turned his chair away from the door as if he needed more privacy than what he already had. “Why?”
“Just wondering,” Baekhyun said nonchalantly. “I just found out you guys have prosthetics here that feel as smooth as skin.”
“And?”
“I just started thinking about you. Weird, huh?”
Groaning, Chanyeol threw his head back, staring at the ceiling. “Don’t do this right now, Baek.”
“I’m not doing anything. I’m just suggesting that, maybe, if you have time, we can do something fun.”
“I want to. You’re tempting me right now.”
“Mmm, how about we meet after--”
“Chanyeol?”
Jerking up, Chanyeol turned his head back and saw Junghee giving him a forced smile. He straightened up his position and made sure his tie was as perfect as it was minutes ago.
“Yes?” he said, putting the phone away from his ear.
“The commissioning company’s representatives are here.”
“Right. Thank you.” Nodding, he dismissed her and quickly turned his attention back to the brunet on the phone. “Hello, Baek? Are you still there?”
“I’m still here, twat.”
“Listen, the people are here. Important ones.”
“Oh.”
Glancing at the door where Junghee was giving him urgent looks, Chanyeol sighed. “Yeah, so I’ll talk to you later. Lunch is downstairs, but you can always go out in Gangnam and find something good to eat. Come by my office around one. We can talk about wedding plans and your ideas, alright?”
“I--”
“Sounds great. I’ll see you soon. Love you. Bye.”
With one swipe on his phone, Chanyeol ended the call, set aside personal matters and proceeded on with business.
