The Letter 64

Chapter 64
The Impulsive & The Unromantic

Chanyeol couldn’t wait to get out of the office. When he returned just as Baekhyun had told him to, Sehun targeted him like prey, but thanks to the numerous amounts of employees Chanyeol used as short term barricades, he was able to lock himself in his office, idly passing the time by reading contracts for the rest of the night before he clocked out. When it was time to leave at the regular hour that most of his workers left, Chanyeol couldn’t help, but stick his head inside Sehun’s own office.

Sehun was leaning hard in his chair with his head thrown back. He wasn’t working anymore, but instead he was talking on the phone. By the way he was scolding and complaining one second, and then softly saying cheesy and loving things, Chanyeol figured that he was talking to Luhan.

Knocking on the door, Chanyeol got Sehun’s attention. “Go home.”

Sehun paused for a second before putting his phone to his chest. “I can’t yet, you ass.”

“Forget about the papers. Do that tomorrow.”

Frowning, Sehun narrowed his eyes, but nonetheless nodded. “Okay.”

Chanyeol grinned before excusing himself and quickly made his way to the elevator to go home.

When Chanyeol got back to his apartment, he failed to enter the right code in because of his jittering, excited fingers. They slipped and entered the wrong code and he had to calm himself in order to hit the right numbers. Once the door was unlocked, Chanyeol had only opened the door an inch before his nose caught onto the smell of food.

The door creaked when Chanyeol pushed it fully open and the clinking and clanking from the kitchen stopped. Loosening the constricting tie from his neck, Chanyeol walked towards his open kitchen, setting his work case on a table along the way.

“Baek?” he called as he turned the corner. “What’re you doing?”

Baekhyun looked away from the sizzling food in front of him and turned to face Chanyeol. “Uh, dinner—I thought you’d be back a little later.”

“I knew you’d be waiting for me. Why the hell would I stick around work?” Chanyeol said, stepping into the kitchen area with a wide grin on his face.

Scoffing, Baekhyun went back to cooking. “You’re impossible,” he said, laughing lightly before feeling Chanyeol slip his arms around his waist from the back.

“And you’re actually cooking something for me—real food, not crusty bread and eggs.”

Baekhyun rolled his eyes and jabbed Chanyeol with his elbow. “I’m doing it to make up for the ‘crusty bread and eggs’ this morning.”

“I know, I know,” Chanyeol said, resting his chin on Baekhyun’s shoulder and pulling himself closer against the smaller male’s body. “But you know, I’d rather have you instead though. You should’ve just spread yourself on the table like the vixen that I know you are instead. That would’ve been just as good.”

Baekhyun hummed. “Dinner first, sex later.”

“Oh,” Chanyeol drawled, smirking. “We’re gonna have sex later?”

“Not if you don’t stop.”

“Stop what?”

“Pushing yourself against my ass and distracting me.”

Chanyeol laughed, and then planted a slightly wet kiss against Baekhyun’s neck. “Fine. Make dinner good and I’ll make the bedroom scene great.”

Rolling his eyes, Baekhyun quickly turned around and took Chanyeol’s face with a hand. Pulling him down, he placed a kiss on his giant's lips. Before Chanyeol could do anything to deepen it, Baekhyun receded and gently pushed against him. “Go have a seat.”

Chanyeol didn’t move from his spot. “You make it so hard to do anything,” he confessed.

“I’m sure you can walk twenty steps over to the dining room,” Baekhyun replied.

Grumbling a few things, Chanyeol sighed. “Fine.” Walking around the counters and island, Chanyeol went over and pulled out a chair. For minutes, he watched Baekhyun go about his cooking, totally captivated despite the fact that Baekhyun was just doing a common thing that most people did.

“You know, you’d make the perfect house wife,” Chanyeol commented after a while.

Slightly smirking, Baekhyun raised his eyes to Chanyeol. “Really now.”

Chanyeol nodded, meeting Baekhyun’s eyes and giving him a sheepish grin. “Yeah. We’ll have to get around to legally making you one soon.”

“Idiot…”

“I know. You even named your little shop after me.”

The night before their planned day together, Baekhyun slept over. Things passionately led to one thing after another and after a few hours of fooling—heatedly—around, Chanyeol pulled Baekhyun's warm, bare body against his. Running his hand along Baekhyun’s figure, Chanyeol whispered small words to him for a few minutes.

Then, as the silence engulfed them, Chanyeol asked, “Why’d you want to sleep over tonight, Baek?”

“So we could start the day together,” Baekhyun yawned. “It’s better this way. You don’t have to pick me up or anything…”

Placing small kisses on Baekhyun’s back, Chanyeol said in between each one, “I don’t mind picking you up.”

“Hn.” Baekhyun’s mouth curved into a small smile. “I do. I don’t want you coming over to my place.”

Chanyeol’s hand paused. “Why not?”

“Just cause…”

Blinking in the dark, Chanyeol elevated himself while turning Baekhyun on his back. “Now that I think about it, you haven’t told me where you lived.”

“Hm, yeah... I know.” Tiredly patting Chanyeol lightly on the cheek, Baekhyun tried to turn back to his side. “Lie back down and let’s just go to sleep.”

Chanyeol wouldn’t let it go and kept Baekhyun on his back, hovering slightly over him. “Why won’t you tell me? I wanna know.”

Knowing that Chanyeol wasn’t going to let it go, Baekhyun sighed and turned on his side, facing Chanyeol. Then, he gently tugged Chanyeol back down on the bed, and soon, they faced each other. “I’m just renting a room. It’s not even an apartment.”

Chanyeol quirked his lips and started to lightly run his hands against Baekhyun’s body. “But where?” he asked.

Baekhyun lightly shrugged, pulling on the covers. “I’ve been living with Lay and Suho for a while—I kinda drained my funds with the shop. I’m getting to a point where I can move out, though.”

Silent for a while, Chanyeol asked, “Lay?”

The mentioning of Lay’s name reminded Baekhyun about Chanyeol’s attitude towards him. Raising his head, he locked Chanyeol’s eyes with his own. “Chanyeol, please don’t tell me that you’re still sour terms with him after all this time.”

Chanyeol scoffed. “No. It’s not that. We got on better terms after you left. He assaulted me, I assaulted him, and then we both went home with cuts and bruises.” He paused. “But hell, Baek. He never said anything about you being back. I practically saw him every day at the office delivering and attending things. We’d small talk here and there, but he never said anything.”

“Of course not,” Baekhyun said, slowly closing his eyes. “I wasn’t ready to see you again…”

“Were you ready when I came that evening?”

“Not really,” Baekhyun mumbled. “You kinda came crashing in.”

Chanyeol let out a small laugh, reaching and touching Baekhyun’s face. After a second passed by, Chanyeol said, “Move in with me, then.”

The suggestion pulled Baekhyun from the tiredness that he felt. “What?”

“Wouldn’t it be better for you to live with me?” Chanyeol said. “You don’t have to rent or share space. We can live together.”

“Chanyeol—”

“Think about it,” he said, shushing Baekhyun. “I’m just putting it on the table, alright. I just like the thought of us living together.” Feeling sleep creeping up on him, Chanyeol yawned and pulled the two of them closer to each other. “I can imagine it. Waking up to you every morning, and then going to bed with you every night, making love whenever the mood hits us…”

“You’re overwhelming…” Baekhyun mumbled before finally resting and letting sleep take over him.

Chanyeol expected their date to start right off the bat, but after getting dressed and spiffed, Baekhyun told him that they had to stop by Kyungsoo’s daycare for a while. When Chanyeol asked why, Baekhyun said that he promised Kyungsoo he’d help out every Sunday. It was then that Chanyeol remembered Baekhyun’s volunteer work.

But, despite wanting to get on with their date day, Chanyeol went along with it. And even though he didn’t like a few whiny kids, who were fine in the beginning, but gotmore and more needy of his attention, Chanyeol liked watching Baekhyun play with a small group of them—that is, if his attention wasn’t being robbed by one of the kids in his group.

“So, uh, I see that what I heard was true,” Kyungsoo said, nodding over to Chanyeol who was being forced to sit on a tiny chair meant for a child that didn’t have long legs. “You’re back together.”

“Yeah…”

“That was quick,” Kyungsoo snorted while keeping the younger toddler in his arms occupied by moving his arms slightly up and down. “But why’d you bring him here?”

“We’re supposed to go on a date, but I didn’t wanna let you down so I thought I could just merge everything together.”

Kyungsoo gaped and hit Baekhyun quickly. “Yah, who the hell takes his date over to a daycare center? Get out of here, Baek.”

Baekhyun blinked. “What? But—”

“Baek, you can’t bring Chanyeol here and call taking care of kids a date. This isn’t Home Economics. If you two wanna play around with kids, I’d be happy to recommend you some reputable adoption agencies—I have a few brochures, okay? But, please be a little bit more romantic when it comes to your second time around dating him, Baek. Bringing him here isn’t romantic.”

Cocking his head in Chanyeol’s direction, Kyungsoo slanted his lips. “Does that look like the face of a guy who’s in the romantic mood right now?”

Baekhyun turned his eyes towards Chanyeol, who was having trouble deciding which kid to pay attention to. Two boys were pulling at the back of Chanyeol’s jacket, trying to get his attention, but the girls in front of him wanted “oppa” to sit and stay.

“No, but it’s cute…”

Kyungsoo looked again. “Okay, yeah, but Baek, come on.” Glancing down at Baekhyun’s hand, he saw a familiar sight. “The guy buys you a ring and you take him here. I’m fine by myself today. Kai’s coming by later, so just go. I think that after three years, Chanyeol deserves more than a lame daycare.”

Baekhyun heaved his shoulders. “Well, if you’re sure—”

“Yes.” Kyungsoo gave him a look. “I’m sure. Now get out of here and just catch up with each other—if you haven’t already.”

“Okay,” Baekhyun nodded.

After walking his way to Chanyeol, Baekhyun set a hand on his boyfriend’s shoulder and bent down. “Hey.”

Jolting, Chanyeol whipped his head to the left, immediately seeing Baekhyun’s face just a few inches from his. Instinct told him to kiss those lips, but his practical side was telling him that he didn’t want to be registered as a sex offender for scarring children with his impulsive actions.

“Hey. What’s going on?”

“We can leave now,” Baekhyun said, offering a small smile and putting his hand on Chanyeol’s back.

“Really?” When Chanyeol caught sight of the sad expressions on the girls he had been playing with, he feigned a sadder tone. “Awww, really?”

Baekhyun nodded, playing along. “Yes.”

Chanyeol gave the girls in front of him a lopsided frown. “I have to go.”

“Why!?” the girls chided.

“I have to go do adult stuff,” Chanyeol explained, putting his hands on his knees and pushing himself up.

“Like work? And math?” they asked.

“Yeah…” Chanyeol said, shrugging. Rising up, he turned his back to the girls to talk to Baekhyun. “So we can really go?”

Nodding, Baekhyun confirmed. “Start the car up first. I need to say good bye to them first.”

“Got it,” Chanyeol said, giving Baekhyun a wink and squeezing his hand before waving at his group of kids. After Chanyeol had gone, the girls sighed and the boys gave them judging looks.

“That oppa was tall,” one of them said to Baekhyun.

Raising a brow, Baekhyun couldn’t help but chuckle. “Yeah. He is.”

“I’m gonna be his girlfriend one day,” the other said, giggling.

Baekhyun couldn’t help, but smile. “What if he’s already married?”

“Then I’ll be sad.”

Baekhyun smiled some more and dropped down to pet each and every one of the kids good bye. “You’ll get over it.”
